The year was 1979. Jimmy Carter was president, our Orioles would lose the World Series to the Pirates, and John and Diane Lake were beginning a journey that would bring them from Vermont to Maryland and bring you the great food and prices you know here at JAD's. "JAD's", many people don't know, actually stands for "John and Diane's".
JAD's Family Restaurant first opened in Brattleboro, VT that year and was very successful right up until they decided to move to Maryland in 1989. JAD's Family Restaurant opened with the help of Diane's brother Bill Shea and her sister Terry Starrat on Eastern Avenue in Essex that year, where Autozone is now located. In 1991 they moved to a new location on Back River Neck Road to the building that is now Shea's Pancake and Waffle House, where they stayed until 1993. Their next stop was Carroll Island, where JAD's Country Kitchen opened at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Carroll Island Road. 1996 came along, Country Kitchen was replaced by Rite Aid on that corner, and John and Diane moved to The Caddyshack on Back River Neck Road. They renamed it JAD's Caddyshack and the rest, as they say, is history.
In the time after John and Diane left the Shea's building in 1993, Diane's brother Bill transformed it in to Shea's Pancake and Waffle House. Sadly, Bill passed away in 2006 and his son Billy and daughter-in-law Maria took over the restaurant and they are still there to this day.
2010 marked a new decade for everyone, and a new beginning for the Lake and Shea families and their restaurants. John, Diane, Billy and Maria joined together to open another location in Dundalk called Caddyshack Express. After an extensive remodeling, the old Dundalk Express building opened to highlight a brand new 7 table cafe and all of Caddyshack's great food available for carryout.
Throughout all the years and all the locations, one thing that hasn't changed is John and Diane's dedication to their family and community. Many of the long-time employees that work in the restaurant and the new carryout location are family members, and JAD's is always receiving letters of appreciation from civic organizations, schools, charities and grateful customers.
You, as our customers, are part of our extended family, and we welcome you to our restaurant. Your business is greatly appreciated and we look forward to serving you far into the future.
